WHAT IS PHLEBOLOGY?

Phlebology is a medical-surgical discipline within the field of angiology and vascular surgery which includes the study, treatment and prevention of diseases affecting  the venous system. Venous pathology can cause many symptoms and signs. Among the most frequent are heaviness in legs and the appearance of varicose veins. Phlebology alterations are highly prevalent in our society afflicting  both men and women. Some sign of venous failure may appear in more than 50% of the population over the age of 50.

There are many  different signs which  range from varicose veins in the legs (dilated and bulging venous cords on the skin of the legs) to  unsightly capillary dilations known as   “spider veins”  which tend to  affect thighs and legs. In very advanced cases, ulcers and wounds can appear on the legs. These cases can be very debilitating and treatment tends to be slow.

MINIMALLY INVASIVE TREATMENT

There are currently many treatments for eliminating varicose veins and spider veins conventional surgery, endolaser, radiofrequency, hemodynamic procedures (CHIVA  strategy) ). All of these have their indications and most still require  surgery . Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy is the least invasive treatment of varicose veins described thus far as it can be performed in an outpatient surgical setting.
